Just because you lay something down before God does not mean that you walk away empty-handed. No, you pick something up. Leave your dreams with God, and he will give you a mission. Whether that mission includes your dreams or not is not up to you. Simply do what He tells you, and you will have dreams fulfilled, even if they were not your first ones.
